ACTIVAGE is a European Multi Centric Large Scale Pilot on Smart Living Environments. The main objective is to build the first European IoT ecosystem across 9 Deployment Sites (DS) in seven European countries, reusing and scaling up underlying open and proprietary IoT platforms, technologies and standards, and integrating new interfaces needed to provide interoperability across these heterogeneous platforms, that will enable the deployment and operation at large scale of Active

Category: Projects
International project whose goal is to design the first care robots that adapt the way they behave and speak to the culture of the person they assist. By designing robots that are more sensitive to the user's needs, the innovative solution will foster older adults' independence and autonomy, with a greater impact on quality of life.

This co-creation study aimed to develop a smartphone self-test application for balance and leg strength in collaboration between older adults and the research team. The paper describes older participants' preferences for, and their contribution to, the application design. The main results were participants' desire to know why, to get clear and appropriate information, and expectations of the self-test to be useful. It was feasible and valuable to develop the self-test application in co-creation with the intended user-group, in order to get direct feedback and suggestions for the development.

Human posture detection allows the capture of the kinematic parameters of the human body, which is important for many applications, such as assisted living, healthcare, physical exercising and rehabilitation. This task can greatly benefit from recent development in deep learning and computer vision. In this paper, we propose a novel deep recurrent hierarchical network (DRHN) model based on MobileNetV2 that allows for greater flexibility by reducing or eliminating posture detection problems related to a limited visibility human torso in the frame, i.e., the occlusion problem.

Category: Projects
The project DIANA improves the life and safety of mild to severely cognitive impaired persons 65 while assisting nurses and care givers by providing novel solutions for action and behaviour recognition. The enabling technology will be AI powered 3D sensors with embedded analytic algorithms. The metadata provided by these sensors will be seamlessly integrated into the nurses working routine and will free valuable time for personalized care. For mild to medium impaired persons these data will also be used to provide a virtual assistant which can guide through certain activities of daily living. A first activity where this will be tested focuses on toileting (personal hygiene), where hardly any technologies exist. DIANA has the unique goal of increasing people's autonomy and digitizing nursing assistance in this area.

Category: User Experience
An innovative game for this project was designed to work around the standard ineffectiveness of traditional learning approaches for direct care workers dealing with stroke survivors. The game runtime, complexity and intrusiveness was modeled and designed from the ground-up around the requirements and needs indicated by direct care workers and experts in the field.
