Smart Healthy Age-Friendly Environments in the Netherlands

Housing and care in the Netherlands are stalled. A shared and inspiring body of thought is the foundation for a future-proof neighbourhood approach. The Smart Healthy Age-Friendly environments (SHAFE) concept offers inspiration, handles and tools for this.

The decentralisations shifted many government tasks to municipalities. For housing, care and support, this meant that municipalities became more responsible for organising and financing these. Moreover, care is increasingly being organised at home and on an outpatient basis. On the one hand, this trend is the result of budget cuts, as it is assumed that care at home and living longer at home is cheaper. On the other hand, the idea is often in line with the wishes of residents themselves. In addition, due to the lack of suitable life course and affordable housing, moving is often not possible.
