6th edition Aging & Gerontology Conference

11 July 2023 | conference

The 6th edition of the Aging & Gerontology Conference was held in Budapest, Hungary on June 12-13, 2023. Aysegul ILGAZ was granted an ITC grant in our Action for this conference where she participated with her research entitled "Successful aging, self-neglect level and factors affecting older people", that was conducted with 316 older individuals aged 60 and over in the descriptive study.

The aim of this study was to explore the successful aging and self-neglect levels of older individuals and to reveal the factors affecting successful aging. Healthy and successful aging in the older adults has become an important issue with the rapid aging of the population, the prolongation of life expectancy and the increase in life expectancy at birth. The United Nations has officially declared the years 2021-2030 as the «The UN Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021–2030)".

In this study carried out during the pandemic, it was seen that successful aging and self-neglect scores were low, and self-neglect was an important factor in successful aging. We believe that minimizing the level of self-neglect will contribute to successful aging. Therefore, there is a need for more studies in the literature evaluating the effect of self-neglect on successful aging. Successful aging and self-neglect levels should be determined in older after the pandemic. And also, conducting studies of the prevalence of self-neglect for sustainable age-friendly environments may provide evidence for this gap. It is thought that it is crucial to reduce the self-neglect factor and to add digital applications/solutions to the initiatives to be made for self-neglect.
